People across Somerset are being asked how help for those affected by domestic abuse should be delivered in the future.

Somerset Council has today (Monday, November 10) launched a consultation to help shape its new domestic abuse strategy.

That will set out how services countywide work together to prevent abuse, protect those experiencing it and support recovery.

The strategy will build on work underway through Somerset Domestic Abuse Service and partner agencies.

It aims to reflect the voices and experiences of local people, ensuring support is accessible, effective, and responsive to the needs of all communities.

The strategy will outline priorities over the next five years, focusing on:

  • Preventing abuse through education, awareness and community action
  • Protecting people at risk and improving access to support
  • Strengthening the response of professionals and partner organisations
  • Supporting recovery and helping people rebuild their lives free from abuse

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council lead executive member for communities, said: “We want everyone in Somerset to feel safe and supported.

“This consultation is a vital opportunity for people to share their experiences, insights and ideas so we can shape a strategy that truly meets local needs.

“Whether you work in support services, know someone who is or has been affected, or simply care about making a difference, we want to hear from you.”

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.

It includes emotional, psychological, economic, online, sexual and physical abuse, and controlling or coercive behaviour.

The consultation will help Somerset Council and its partners understand what is working well and where improvements can be made, from early intervention and community awareness, to safe accommodation and long-term recovery.
