A primary school in Somerset has been awarded a £1,500 grant to develop its outdoor learning spaces.
St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, secured the funding through Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme to improve its gardening facilities and expand hands-on learning opportunities for pupils.
The grant will be used to create a new gardening area, helping children connect with nature while supporting their physical, mental, and social development.
Headteacher Mrs Croker said: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed.
"This funding will make a real difference and we cannot wait to begin developing the new gardening area.
"Our children will benefit from more opportunities to learn outside, explore nature, and develop important life skills through hands-on activities."
The project was made possible thanks to community support, with shoppers voting for the school via tokens in the local supermarket.
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said: "We are thrilled that St Benedict’s has been awarded this grant.
"Projects like this highlight the importance of connecting children with nature and promoting healthy lifestyles.
"It’s wonderful to see our local community come together to support initiatives that make a positive difference in young people’s lives."
St Benedict’s places a strong emphasis on outdoor learning and recently hosted a forest school event for nursery children, where they made leaf caterpillars and nature crowns, took part in a scavenger hunt, and toasted marshmallows.
Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme offers grants to schools, charities, and not-for-profit organisations to help children and young people access healthy, nutritious food.
The scheme also funds breakfast and holiday clubs, cooking and gardening activities, and schemes that provide fruit, healthy snacks, or opportunities to develop life skills and confidence.
