Night-time anti-social behaviour and worries about violence against women and girls are among the biggest concerns for people in Taunton, writes Phil Hill.

They were raised in a community review to identify what matters most to residents.

Taunton Town Council (TTC) will use the findings to shape the town’s future through its own and community organisations’ work.

Other concerns included limited activities and spaces for young people, who want more leisure and recreational options.

Climate change, flooding, drainage, and littering were urgent priorities.

And residents want better communication, more noticeboards, newsletters, and to be involved in council decisions.

The review, funded by Somerset Council, was carried out by Thrive—formerly Community Council for Somerset—for Somerset Association of Local Councils.

A TTC spokesperson said: "Whilst there were other areas of concern, these were the matters that came up most frequently."

They added: "It’s important to remember that whilst TTC is committed to responding to community priorities, responsibility for implementing the changes identified by the community review does not lie solely with the council.

"Successful implementation of the recommendations will rely on partnership working.

"There are however several issues identified as areas for improvement which TTC does hold responsibility for."

Action already taken by TTC includes partnerships with police, community groups and businesses; employing two town centre street marshals; an app or web browser for reporting business crime; and funding CCTV after Somerset Council cut it off.

The town council, which annually provides youth grants to various organisations, has appointed a consultant to review youth provision.

It has also employed a climate officer to advise on the environmental impact of projects, upgraded litter bins to support recycling and committed to buying electric equipment and vehicles where possible.

Marketing agency Hatched has been engaged to implement Shout About Taunton to champion what the town has to offer.

Another key issue was the need for improved facilities, particularly public toilets in the town centre.

The spokesperson said: "Over the last year, TTC has improved the cleaning of all our facilities, taking it in-house, allowing for better oversight.

"Refurbishments of toilets include those in Canon Street Car Park, Hamilton Gault Park and Paul Street."

They added: "This will be a focus and priority of the town council over the next couple of years as we oversee the proposed actions, to be undertaken by the most appropriate organisation, community group or individuals."
