A MCDONALD'S restaurant off a major roundabout in Somerset has been closed in what the company said is a "difficult decision".

The fast food company's store location at Wake's Garage in Sparkford, Somerset, closed after final orders on Sunday, November 23.

The global fast-food chain said it is seeking to continue to grow its estate but confirmed the fate of the store near Yeovil after a store review.

With more than 40,000 restaurant locations worldwide, McDonald's hopes to have at least 50,000 stores by 2027.

McDonald's has confirmed that the staff at this closed restaurant have been offered the chance to apply at nearby McDonald's outlets and said the closure of the Wake's Garage location "no longer serves the needs of its local community."

A McDonald's company spokesperson said: “While we continue to grow our estate, we occasionally need to review the future of individual restaurants.

"Sometimes this means making the difficult decision to close a store when it is no longer serving the needs of its local community.

"This decision was not taken lightly, and all staff were offered the chance to apply for roles at nearby restaurants within the same franchised organisation.”

The nearest open McDonald's restaurants closest to Sparkford are at Flushing Meadow, Yeovil, Lysander Road in Yeovil, and on the A371 at UNIT A, Lawrence Hill, Wincanton.
