A year 11 student at a school in Taunton has been named Somerset's Youth Referee of the Year.

RJ Pattison from Monkton Wood Academy received the countywide award for 2025 for his outstanding contribution to youth football, having started officiating matches at just 14.

He regularly referees across local youth leagues in Somerset and has recently begun officiating adult games.

Mr Pattison said: "I'm really proud to receive this award.

"Refereeing has taught me so much about responsibility and teamwork, and it's amazing to be recognised for doing something I love."

He was commended for his understanding of the game, leadership on the pitch, and calm approach to decision-making.

Katrina Darley, Year 11 raising standards lead and science teacher at Monkton Wood Academy, said: "RJ is an outstanding young man who demonstrates maturity and dedication in everything he does.

"This award is well-deserved, and we're incredibly proud of his achievements."

Alongside his academic studies, Mr Pattison trains three times a week to maintain his fitness and takes part in regular referee training and mentoring through the Somerset Football Association.

The support has helped him continue to develop his skills and confidence as a match official.

Monkton Wood Academy said the achievement not only reflects his dedication to football but also highlights the life skills he has gained through refereeing, including resilience, communication, and leadership.

These are qualities the school believes will benefit him both on and off the pitch.
