A SOMERSET story is heading to the New York stage this summer, produced by a Minehead-born man and starring a Taunton-born actor.
Snazzy, a new play written and produced by Minehead-born actor, producer, and co-artistic director of RiffRaff NYC Joe Staton, will be presented as part of the New York Theatre Festival in a developmental production.
RiffRaff NYC is a company dedicated to supporting immigrant artists.
The production, running at the LATEA Theatre on July 21 at 9pm, July 22 at 6.30pm and July 25 at 4.30pm, is based on a true story with ‘roots firmly in Somerset’.
Snazzy tells the story behind the creation of Snazaroo – the globally recognised face-painting brand that began in Minehead.
In the 1980s, Lauren and Paul Staton developed their own face-paints whilst working at Butlins holiday centre, laying the foundations for what would become an internationally successful company.
The 90-minute dramedy is based on A Snazzy Tale, written by Staton’s mother, and explores the relationship behind the business. While generations have grown up with the brand, few know the story behind its creation.

Joe Staton said he brought the story to life as a tribute to his parents.
He said: “My mum wrote A Snazzy Tale, and it was deeply moving to me.
“My dad passed away when I was two, and reading her book – and writing this play - has been a way to get to know him better.
“I want people to know my mum’s story because it’s incredibly inspiring. It’s a story about building something from nothing, and about the teamwork that made it possible.”
Staton is also a company member of the Ensemble Shakespeare Company, with Snazzy marking his debut as a playwright.
Casting is currently underway, with British actor Ross Mason confirmed to play Paul, and Brenna Peerbolt in talks to take the role of Lauren.
The ensemble will include Taunton-born actor Ronan Spierenburg, alongside British actor Truman Gaudoin and actress Madeleine Dore, each playing multiple roles.
