Google has launched its Preferred Sources feature, allowing you to select Somerset County Gazette as your main source for news happening in Taunton and beyond.

The new service lets users choose which publishers they will see in their ‘Top Stories’ in search.

Having previously launched in the USA and India, the feature is now available worldwide.

Describing the feature, Google says: “You can select your favourite sources and stay up to date on the latest content from the sites you follow and subscribe to — whether that’s your favourite sports blog or a local news outlet.”

This is how you can add Somerset County Gazette to your list of preferred sources on Google.

How to turn on your Google Preferred Sources

  • Search for ‘Somerset or Taunton news’ in Google
  • Click on the icon next to the Top stories section
  • Search for ‘Somerset County Gazette’ or ‘www.somersetcountygazette.co.uk’ in the Preferred Sources box that appears
  • Click on the checkbox to the right of Somerset County Gazette

When you go back to Google and refresh your results, you will see more Somerset County Gazette stories in your Top Stories section.

A Google blog post explained: "Once you select your sources, they will appear more frequently in Top Stories or in a dedicated "From your sources" section on the search results page.

"You’ll still see content from other sites, and can manage your selections at any time.

"You can select as many sources as you like, and we learned from our early Labs users that people really value being able to select a range of sources — with over half of users choosing four or more.

"If you've previously signed up in Labs, your selections will automatically apply and you’ll continue to see more of those sites within Top Stories."
