Person trapped after double-decker bus crash in Cannington

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines and a heavy rescue unit after receiving reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on New Road, Cannington, near Bridgwater at around 4pm on Sunday, April 26.

At the scene, crews from Burnham-on-Sea and Taunton fire stations confirmed this collision involved a car and a double-decker bus, with a person stuck inside their vehicle.

Fire crews released the ‘casualty’ using gear, and they then left the person in the care of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust crews on scene.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) confirmed a person was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital by ambulance.

The spokesperson said: “We were called at 15:53hrs on Sunday 26 April to a road traffic collision near Cannington.

"We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, a critical care car and an operations officer to the scene and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Musgrove Park Hospital.”

A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that no people were injured on the bus.

The spokesperson said: "Two fire engines and a heavy rescue unit were all sent to a report of a 2-vehicle road traffic collision near Cannington, Somerset.

"On arrival, crews confirmed this collision involved one car and a double-decker bus, with one person still trapped in the car.

"Crews released the casualty using cutting gear, and they were then handed over to ambulance crews on scene.

"No persons were injured on the bus."

Avon and Somerset Police were also called to help fire crews.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called to a two-vehicle collision on the A39 New Road near Cannington at about 3.50pm yesterday (Sunday, April 26).

"Paramedics took one person to hospital.

"A road closure was in place while emergency services attended the scene, and the road reopened at about 6.50pm."
