Taunton woman sentenced for assaulting two police officers

The defendant, Tiffany Knight, 35, who currently lives in Chard, was sentenced at Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Monday May 18 2026 after pleading guilty to two offences.

The court heard that on February 15 2026, police were called to an address to carry out welfare checks, with sounds of disturbance reported from within.

Police were there to ascertain if there was a problem, and conducted a search of Knight’s property, during which she was shouting and swearing continually.

The court heard that Knight kicked out towards one officer, who avoided contact by dodging, with the other police officer seeing the attempted kick.

Knight then kicked the other officers’ right inner thigh, which caused ‘initial pain and discomfort’, the court heard.

Knight was described as being ‘continuously abusive towards the officers throughout’.

Knight was arrested for assaulting both officers and was ‘difficult’ while being transported to custody, banging her head on the side of the vehicle, spitting in the van and swearing, the court heard.

In defence, it was heard Knight 'apologised for her behaviour' and admitted to having a 'drinking problem', which she is dealing with.

It was heard the police attended Knight's address for a welfare check, which ‘went wrong’ and they ended up arresting the person they were supposed to check on.

Knight was given a six-month conditional discharge for each offence, so 12 months in total.

Magistrates said: “You are not being punished, but if you commit another offence in 12 months, you will be sentenced for these.”

Knight was ordered to pay £50 in compensation to one of the police officers, and a surcharge of £26, so £76 in total.
