A collection of military medals built up by a former soldier from Somerset is estimated to fetch up to £40,000 at auction.

The owner, who was a high-ranking officer, took up his hobby of collecting medals during retirement.

They are now going under the hammer at Charterhouse Auctioneers, in Sherborne, next Thursday (May 28).

Richard Bromell, from Charterhouse, said the collection is expected to be sold for between £35,000 and £40,000.

He added: "The owner was a professional soldier during his life and ended up as a high-ranking officer.

"In retirement, his interest in medal collecting took off, and he spent nearly 30 years amassing the collection."

The owner, who lived in Somerset on the Wiltshire border, bought up medals from The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, an Irish line infantry regiment of the British Army from 1881 until 1968.

The medal collection is part of the three-day Charterhouse auction starting next Wednesday (May 27).
