World Cup patriotism went to football fan Mark Dana’s head back in 2006 – literally.
Mark, who was then proprietor of McDana’s seafront fish and chip shop in Minehead, advertised his support for the home football team by sporting a haircut featuring the three England lions and the cross of St George.
Speaking at the time, he told the County Gazette: “I’ll be trying to watch every game, but business will have to come first.”
What did he think of England’s chances?
“Of course they’ll win, although Germany have a good chance as they are hosting the tournament.”
Mark, who had the hairdo done by Dan James at Something Else Hair Salon, Summerland Road, hoped to be glued to a television for England’s first match, which was played in Frankfurt on June 10 against Paraguay.
England won the match 1-0, but were eventually knocked out of the tournament at the hands of Portugal in the quarter-finals, famously losing on penalties in Gelsenkirchen.
Hosts Germany went one step further, falling at the semi-final stage to eventual tournament winners Italy, who beat France on penalties in the final in Berlin.
