A Taunton Deane motorway services staff member has been recognised for 50 years of service, after joining the site long before the M5 was even built.
Roadchef has honoured long‑serving team member Nigel Quick with a special award to mark the milestone.
Nigel started work at what is now Roadchef’s Taunton Deane Motorway Service Area in 1976, when the site sat on the old A38 and consisted of a small building with a shop, restaurant and forecourt.
The southbound main building was only just being constructed, and the northbound side traded from a Portakabin serving bacon and sausage baps.

Beginning his career as a forecourt attendant, Nigel later became a forecourt supervisor, responsible for ordering fuel in the days before modern tanker deliveries.
Around 20 years ago, he moved into the maintenance team at the suggestion of a colleague and became known across the site for his ability to fix almost anything.
Since then, he has helped shape Taunton Deane’s layout and facilities, helping on major projects including building the site director’s office from what was once a single cash office, creating the commercial office on the northbound side, and constructing the Coach Costa on the southbound side.
Roadchef says his “biggest claim to fame” is designing the gaming layout template now used across the wider business.
Nigel’s long service was marked with a presentation from Roadchef CEO Tim Gittins, who handed over a Long Service Award in recognition of his contribution and dedication.
Tim Gittins said: "Nigel’s 50 years of service is an incredible achievement and a reflection of his loyalty, skill, and work ethic.
"He has made a lasting impact not only at Taunton Deane, but across the wider business through his creativity and practical expertise. Stories like Nigel’s highlight the positive and supportive culture that Roadchef offers people to build fulfilling careers."
Outside of work, Nigel enjoys family life with his wife Debbie and their two children. A keen DIY enthusiast, he has recently transformed his garden with decking, trellis, a fully functioning garden bar and plenty of fairy lights.
