A nursery in Taunton has been praised by Ofsted following its most recent inspection.

Tops Day Nurseries – Mini Mariners, located off Bridgwater Road, was inspected on April 29 2026, with inspectors finding that safeguarding standards are being met and embedded effectively across the setting.

The early years provider, which cares for children aged from just a few months old through to school age, was found to be meeting expected standards across its provision, reflecting a positive overall performance.

The recent report highlights that leaders and staff have created “an open and positive culture of safeguarding”, ensuring concerns are identified and acted on promptly so that children feel safe.

Inspectors particularly praised the nursery’s approach to children’s welfare and wellbeing, which was judged to be at a “strong” standard. Children were found to be developing an excellent understanding of healthy habits, with regular outdoor play supporting their physical development.

Staff were also commended for encouraging independence from an early age.

Babies and young children were observed practising everyday skills such as handwashing and participating confidently in routines, while older children demonstrated problem-solving abilities during play.

The report notes that relationships between staff and children are a key strength, with youngsters forming close bonds and showing confidence in communicating their needs.

Care practices, including mealtimes and personal care, were described as highly organised and responsive, ensuring children’s needs are consistently met.

Partnerships with parents were also highlighted as a positive feature, particularly in helping to keep children safe, such as through shared approaches to sun safety.

In terms of learning and development, the nursery was judged to be meeting the expected standard. Children were found to make good progress from their starting points, demonstrating enthusiasm for stories and engaging well with questions to reinforce their understanding.

Overall, inspectors concluded that the setting provides a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive, with especially strong provision for their care and wellbeing.

Mini Mariners was expanded earlier this year with a ribbon-cutting event officially opened by Taunton MP, Gideon Amos.
