A TAUNTON shopping centre car park is partially closed off as works begin on a major improvement project.

Shoppers at the town centre Sainsbury's store have been left with fewer options to park as "essential works" have begun.

The top-level car park, which is regularly used by motorists and often proves popular during busy periods and in the evenings after 6pm, has been fenced off while work takes place.

Contractors and equipment were seen on site this week as the project got underway.

A sign at the car park site reads: "Your top level car park will be closed for essential works.

"Apologies for any inconvenience.

"Works are due to complete summer 2026.

"Car parking will still be available at the ground level and the store will remain open as usual."

The rest of the car park remains open as usual for Sainsbury's customers and town centre visitors.

The closure means the number of available spaces has been reduced, although customers are still able to access the supermarket and park on the lower level of the site.

The car park serves not only Sainsbury's shoppers but is also frequently used by visitors travelling into Taunton town centre.

No further details about the nature of the works have yet been made public.
