A McDonald's restaurant and drive-thru could soon be built on a busy car park in the centre of a small Somerset town.

The Haskins Retail Centre, which lies off the A371 Townsend in the centre of Shepton Mallet, currently boasts a large car park behind the town's police station, Greggs and Subway outlets.

McDonald's Restaurant Ltd. has submitted plans to build a new outlet at the western end of this car park, with the remaining spaces being reconfigured to provide a safer access to the site.

Somerset Council is expected to make a decision on the proposals by Christmas.

Under the plans, the new unit would be built at the western edge of the brownfield site, reducing the total number of parking spaces from 318 to 256.

A new mini-roundabout will be created outside the retail centre's entrance (at the eastern end of the car park), with the northern spaces in the car park being rearranged to provide safer pedestrian routes within the area.

The new restaurant is expected to be open from 6am to midnight daily, and is expected to create up to 120 local jobs.

The existing car showroom to the south will also be converted into two further units, which could provide up to 30 additional jobs depending on their eventual occupiers.

A spokesperson for Planware Ltd. (representing McDonald's) said: "The restaurant will provide 50 covers for visitors to eat their meals within a relaxed modern environment.

"The dining area will include a variety of seating types and table sizes tailored to the customers' needs.

"The proposals provide the opportunity for McDonald’s to meet a long-standing requirement for a restaurant to serve this catchment area, to meet customer demand and introduce additional choice in the market.

"The proposed development represents a multi-million-pound investment creating jobs both during the construction and operation phases, resulting in many associated economic benefits for the local area.

"The site represents an appropriate location for a drive-thru restaurant, which will be well placed to offer refreshments to passing customers and those in the surrounding area."

Somerset Council is expected to make a decision on the plans within the next six months.

It is not presently clear whether this decision will be taken in public by its planning committee east (which handles major applications within the former Mendip area) or through the delegated powers of its planning officers.

If approval is granted, construction could begin by mid-2027 ahead of a proposed opening in 2028.
