A museum in Street is inviting people to share the stories behind their shoes.

Shoemakers Museum is calling on the public to take part in its '12 Shoes. 12 Stories.' campaign as part of its first birthday celebrations on Monday, August 31.

The museum, which celebrates the heritage and craftsmanship of Street’s shoemaking past, is looking for 12 pairs of shoes with a personal meaning to feature in a special display.

The shoes could be anything from wedding shoes and first school shoes to football boots, work boots, or a much-loved pair that has travelled the world.

Rosie Martin, director of Shoemakers Museum, said: "Shoes can hold so many memories, and we know there must be some wonderful stories sitting in wardrobes and cupboards across Street and Somerset.

"They don’t need to be old, rare or valuable – we’re interested in what they mean to the person who wore them.

"We’d love the local people of Street to get involved and help us share 12 very different stories for our first birthday."

Submissions can be made by emailing hello@shoemakersmuseum.org.uk by Thursday, August 20, and should include a photograph of the shoes and a brief explanation of their significance.

The call-out comes ahead of A Big Day Out, taking place from 10am to 3pm on Monday, August 31.

The family-friendly celebration will include live music, Punch and Judy shows, inflatables, lawn games, and donkey rides, as well as animals from Second Chance Petting Zoo.

Inside the museum, children can design their own birthday shoes, make birthday hats, and join a scavenger hunt exploring Street’s shoemaking history.

A new community mural created by artist Jon Minshull and residents will also be unveiled.

Admission to the birthday event is included with standard museum entry, and annual pass holders can attend at no extra cost.
