Former Somerset and England cricket star Marcus Trescothick officially opened a new sports pavilion on Stoke St Gregory Playing Field back in 2021.

The pavilion was named in honour of former Somerset cricketer Dennis Silk, whose widow Diana Silk assisted at the opening event, which coincided with a village summer fete on the same day.

The new structure replaced the former village station waiting room, which was dismantled and reassembled on the field when the railway station closed in 1964.

Mr Silk, who played for Somerset for four seasons up until 1960 and was later a cricket administrator, championed the new pavilion.

Playing field chairman Neil Sollis said at the time: "Dennis Silk passed away on the day planning permission was granted for the pavilion, so we decided it would be fitting for everything he's done for the village and cricket that we named it after him.

"We were very fortunate to have Marcus Trescothick to come and open it."
