THE ORGANISERS have said a record number of entries took part in the eighth edition of the Wessex 10k as they look forward to the Langport Triathlon.
The race saw a lot more spectators lining the route and cheering runners across the finish line on Friday, July 31, at 7pm.
Adam Fieldhouse from Taunton claimed first place in the men’s race with a winning time of 35 minutes and 39 seconds, while Yeovil Town RRC’s Gill Pearson topped the women’s results in 39 minutes and 31 seconds.
Catherine Rands, event organiser for Racenation, said: "We were delighted with the eighth edition of the Wessex 10k; we had a record number of entries this year and a lot more spectators lining the route and at the finish line cheering on the athletes."
Fieldhouse finished ahead of Henry Samuel (36:47) and Mark Bungay (36:48), who also took first in the men’s vet 40 category.
Gill Pearson led a strong showing from Yeovil Town RRC, with Felicity Came finishing second in 43:12 and under-20 runner Kayleigh Philps third in 44:08.
In the men’s under-20 category, Harry Bridges placed first in 38:35, followed by Milo Mead of Wells City Harriers (42:57) and Oakley Giles (44:42).

- Vet 60 men: Lawrie Morris of Yeovil Town RRC (45:32)
- Vet 70 men: Steve Crook of Chard Road Runners (51:39)
- Vet 80+ men: John Mitchell of Street Striders (1:01:18)
For the women:
- Vet 40: Felicity Came (43:12)
- Vet 50: Gill Pearson (39:31)
- Vet 60: Faith Foote (54:57)
- Vet 70: Karen Shears of Street Striders (1:03:39)
- Under-20: Hollie Ainsworth (1:03:55)
The event was made possible by more than 40 volunteers who supported tasks including route marshalling, registration, car parking, and the water station.

Ms Rands said: "We were joined by over forty volunteers who played a massive part in supporting the event from route marshals to event registration to carparking to the water station and of course the finish line where we were very happy to be joined by lovely Molly Kirk where she could be part of the event and feel the excitement, first hand, as the finishers crossed the line."
She also congratulated the top finishers.
Ms Rands said: "Congratulations to Adam Fieldhouse from Taunton and Gill Pearson from Yeovil, our first male and female across the finish line."
She took the opportunity to look ahead to the next major event on the calendar.
Ms Rands said: "We are looking forward to the 32nd edition of the Langport Triathlon, held at Lifestyle Fitness Centre, Huish Episcopi Academy.
"One of the most popular, longest-running Sprint Triathlons in the South West, which draws entries from far afield.
"The 400m swim, 22.5km bike and 5k run is suitable for all abilities, from the seasoned triathlete to the complete novice, everyone is made to feel welcome and supported, there is always a great community feel atmosphere making it an event not to be missed."
More than 300 entries have already been received for this year’s triathlon, with organisers saying remaining places are selling fast.
