Search the Public Notice PortalPLANS have been revealed to repurpose a former Iceland store in Somerset into a new 'amusement facility'.
Applicant Mr Mikael Brown, on behalf of High Score Arcades Ltd, submitted a planning application (reference 26/01740/COU) to change the use of units 6-8 in The Quedam Centre, previously occupied by Iceland, to a family entertainment centre featuring arcade and skill-based games.
The proposal would see the vacant premises brought back into use following Iceland's closure earlier this year.
The supermarket chain shut its Quedam Shopping Centre branch after its lease expired, with the store closing its doors permanently in January 2026. The closure prompted concern from some residents, who feared Yeovil town centre was becoming a "ghost town" amid a number of retail departures.
Now, the site's prospective new operators say the arcade would help attract visitors back into the town centre and support surrounding businesses.
According to planning documents, High Score Arcades Ltd operates modern indoor amusement venues offering fixed-fee timed sessions with unlimited access to a range of arcade machines and games.
The company says the attraction would cater for families, groups, adults and visitors of all ages in a supervised environment.
A planning statement submitted with the application reads: "The proposal will make productive use of an existing commercial unit within Yeovil town centre, helping to increase activity and footfall within The Quedam Centre.
"Town centres continue to face challenges from changing shopping habits and the growth of online retail.
"Introducing a complementary leisure use will encourage people to spend longer in the town centre, benefiting surrounding retailers, cafés and other businesses through increased visitor numbers and dwell time."
The applicant argues that leisure attractions can play an important role in maintaining the vitality of town centres as traditional retail habits change.
The arcade would operate entirely within the existing building, with no external alterations proposed.
Planning documents state that customer activity would be contained inside the premises and that the venue would be professionally managed by staff, with CCTV and management procedures in place.
The statement adds that the development represents a sustainable reuse of an existing commercial unit in a location that is easily accessible by foot, bicycle, public transport and nearby car parks.
High Score Arcades says the project would bring investment into a currently vacant property, create local jobs and broaden Yeovil's leisure offering.
The planning statement concludes: "The proposed change of use will provide investment in a currently vacant commercial unit, create local employment opportunities, increase town centre footfall and strengthen the leisure offer available in Yeovil."
South Somerset District Council will consider the application in due course.
