AN update on the future of a monthly Sunday market in a Somerset City has been confirmed.
Back in June this year, Wells City Council announced that a bi-monthly Sunday market would take place in Wells City Centre, running alongside its existing Wednesday and Saturday markets.
Initially deemed a trial, the team at Wells Market said that the Sunday market would run for the rest of the year if successful, culminating in a Christmas market weekend.
Organisers hoped the market would introduce a fresh mix of traders, entertainment and themed attractions to the town centre, while supporting the growth of local independent businesses. In an update, the scheme is continuing after a successful turnout so far, with the next event pencilled in for Sunday, 13 September.
The September event will therefore mark the start of the second half of the programme, with three dates remaining before the end of the year.
This programme will finish before the start of 2027, with a final two-day Christmas Market planned in December. The city council says that the event will feature festive displays, family activities and additional stalls.
Markets have been at the heart of Wells for centuries, with the Market Place serving as the city's commercial centre since medieval times. Located between Wells Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, the square has long hosted regular markets and fairs, helping establish Wells as an important trading centre in Somerset.
Today, the Market Place remains a focal point of city life, hosting weekly Wednesday and Saturday markets that continue a tradition stretching back hundreds of years.
