Somerset polling stations confirmed for 2027 local elections

The council has carried out a root-and-branch review of Somerset polling stations, ensuring that facilities across the county meet the required standards when voters go to the polls on May 6, 2027.

The council’s constitution and governance committee met in Taunton on Thursday afternoon (September 24) to agree the final list of buildings, reducing the total number of polling places from 382 to 348.

The list will be effective from December 1, in the event of any last-minute by-elections, with the formal pre-election period (formerly known as purdah) expected to begin in early-March shortly after the annual budget.

Next year's local elections will be the first fought on the new boundaries agreed following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE).

The overall number of councillors will be reduced from 110 to 96, with 90 single-member divisions and three two-member divisions (namely Cheddar and Axbridge, Minehead, and Wells).

The choice of polling stations has not been without controversy, with Councillor Steven Pugsley (Conservative, Dulverton and Exmoor) making a plea for Hawkridge Village Hall in Exmoor to keep being used.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon (September 24), he said: "Exmoor is one of the most sparsely populated areas of the county, I acknowledge that – but that therefore means that we have to make above and beyond provision for rural areas.

"It needs to be there, if nothing else as a signal to everyone else that Somerset Council takes rural democracy seriously."
