BUTLINS Minehead has found itself in a sticky situation to be proud of – breaking the world record for the largest stick of seaside rock ever made.

The stick of ‘Suga-Rock’ has been commissioned by Butlins to celebrate girl band Sugababes arrival at the resort next month.

Weighing in at a whopping 440.8kg and 125cm in circumference, the stick of rock was made from more than 285kg of sugar and took a team of ten people over 24 hours to roll into shape.

The equivalent of 4,898 normal-size sticks of rock, half the length of a standard London double-decker bus and the same weight as a baby elephant, the Butlins rock needs a forklift truck and at least seven men to lift it.

Butlins ‘Suga-Rock’ will be displayed for the next month at Butlins Minehead Resort where the Sugababes will perform to a crowd of more than 4,000 fans.

Butlins will then use the record-breaking ‘Suga-Rock’ to raise funds for BBC Children in Need, which will be broadcasting live from the Skyline Pavilion on Friday, November 14, during its 2008 telethon.

Julian Highfield, resort director for Butlins Minehead, said: “Even though the ‘Suga-Rock’ is anything but light, we wanted to have a bit of fun and provide a little light relief while raising awareness for the fantastic Sugababes who we are delighted to be welcoming to Minehead.

“Plus, if we can raise some money for charity, then that’s even better.”

The previous world record was set in December 2000. The rock weighed 424.5kg – 16.3kg lighter than the Suga-Rock.
