IT took just five days for competitors to fill the 400 places at the Taunton Deane Foot Anstey Triathlon on Sunday, May 17.

Organisers are holding a training day on the Sunday before the race at Wellington Sports Centre to pass on tips and to allow competitors to go round the course.

Experienced athletes will advise on topics such as what to wear, how to manage the transitions, what to eat and drink and how to bike among 350 others.

Event organiser Paul Lester said: “We always fill the places quickly, but the popularity of triathalons, both locally and nationally, is growing at a tremendous rate.

“We have everyone from complete beginners to highly experienced competitors from sports clubs across the South-West swimming, cycling and running.”

Foot Anstey partner and competitor Andrew Hannam said: “We’re also looking for volunteers to help run the event.

“The organisers need marshals around the course to keep competitors on track, help in counting the swimmers’ lengths and help at the transition points.

“There is something for everyone to do, including helping at the drink stations or simply being there to cheer the athletes on.”

The race has something for all levels of fitness - the sprint for more experienced athletes and a novice event open to anyone new triathlons.

Both events have male and female categories in various age groups.

The triathletes will use Wellington Sports Centre swimming pool for the swim before cycling towards Milverton and Wiveliscombe and running along footpaths and quiet lanes.
