STAFF, pupils and parents are planning to go out in style when Blagdon Hill Primary School closes for the last time next month.

Somerset County Council decided to shut the village school due to falling numbers – despite a concerted campaign from locals to keep it open.

The last lessons will be taught at the end of this term, with the premises officially closing on August 21.

From September, pupils will be sent to other primary schools in the area.

The school is throwing open its doors for a farewell bash on Thursday, July 16.

Children are baking cakes for a free tea between 2pm and 5pm, followed by a free hog roast with soft drinks going on until 7.30pm – guests are asked to take a picnic blankets and garden chairs.

Head teacher Linda O’Neill said: “We are inviting former pupils, governors, teachers or anyone with any other connection with the school.

“Anyone in the local community who would like the opportunity to visit the school before it finally closes its doors is welcome.

“Everyone is free to drop in for a chat, to look around the school and enjoy some light refreshment.”

There will be a display of photos and memorabilia reflecting the school’s history.

Somerset Records Office is loaning a number of items and organisers are asking for anyone else to send in relevant items.

For further information or to help with the display, contact either Mrs O’Neill or Jackie Adams in the school office on 01823-421207.
