This advertising board, used to promote the County Gazette during the Second World War, is going under the hammer in Taunton.

The billboard plugged weekly features such as militia camp items, territorial topics, the county regiment and civil defence information.

Back then the paper was published from head offices in Castle Green, rather than our home in St James Street, Taunton.

The Gazette, which now hits the shops on Thursdays rather than Saturdays, is still great value at 70p but in the war years it was cost 2d (less than 1p).

We've also become a 24-7 publishing operation with breaking news and sport updated round the clock on this website.

The board is part of a collection of 18 in a Wartime ARP memorabilia and literature sale of antiques and collectables at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Priory saleroom, in Winchester Street, Taunton, at 10am on Thursday, November 12.
