YEAR six at Milverton Primary School were the first group to be judged Winners in Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

Head teacher Richard Stead nominated them for their pioneering work in a peer mentoring project. The pupils give up their break time to help younger children sort out minor playtime disagreements. They also initiate games and are on the look out for children who are lonely or excluded to get them involved.

Mr Stead said: “Their efforts mean bullying behaviour is not given a chance to take root and is rejected by children across the school.”

The pupils have spoken at a peer mentoring conference in Bristol and were recently recognised with the Diana Award for Anti-Bullying.
