Wellington councillors are being asked by Mark Formosa, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Taunton Deane, to set up a ‘task and finish’ group dedicated to promoting the idea of a new railway station for the town.

Mr Formosa will speak to councillors at their monthly meeting on March 1.

Several councillors accepted Mr Formosa’s invitation to join Network Rail executive on their recent visit to Wellington when the campaign to re-open the town’s station was discussed.

Mr Formosa said: “A new station is going to be crucial to Wellington’s future economic prosperity and we are currently the largest town on the mainline not to have our own station.

“There is massive support from the public and business leaders in Wellington for reopening a railway station and I am sure that if all the community work together on the Trains for Wellington (T4W) campaign which I launched last year, then we will be successful.”

T4W wants to see a new railway station for Wellington become a real possibility by 2014 - the 50th anniversary of the old station’s closure.
