NATIONAL Blood Service mascot Billy Blood Drop visited Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, with a sack of goodies for children staying on the wards.

Staff at the NHS Blood and Transplant donated more than 200 chocolate selection boxes.

Jane Horn, a play specialist at Musgrove, said: “It was a fun visit, but there was also a serious message for the children and their families - donated blood is essential for the NHS.”

Fay Simcox, NHS Blood and Transplant spokeswoman, said: “Children suffering with illnesses such as leukaemia may have blood transfusions to help as part of their treatment.

“We hope that children in the hospitals enjoyed meeting Billy and eating their treats.”

The NBS still needs to collect 7,000 units of blood every day, even during the colder months.

Ms Simcox added: “We’re very grateful to local donors for their commitment and hope to encourage anyone thinking about donating to come forward.

“Please think of the many people that are in hospital and will continue to need blood and blood products.

“By donating blood, you could be giving someone the best present they will ever receive - the gift of life.”

Anyone aged 17 to 65, weighing more than 50kg and in general good health could potentially become a blood donor.

There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
