VILLAINS have plundered lead worth thousands of pounds from properties in Norton Fitzwarren.

In the latest raid at the weekend, lead was taken from the roof of All Saints Church, leading to extensive water damage as heavy rains poured in, ruining carpets, furniture and electrical equipment.

The 16th Century roof beams of the church were also exposed to the elements.

Churchwarden Lawrence Burr said: “The damage to these vulnerable buildings is heartbreaking, especially as this represents many hours of volunteer labour to put right again.

“These uncaring vandals must not be allowed to get away with this destructive behaviour that brings misery to so many people.”

Last Tuesday, the village hall was hit, leading to a leak that brought water into the main corridor.

Mary Hayward, chairman of the village hall committee, said: “We had to install temporary roofing and get a dehumidifier in. Fortunately it didn’t affect activities at the hall but it’s frustrating as a lot of people put a lot of time and effort into the hall.”

Norton Fitzwarren Primary School was targeted at the end of January when all its lead was taken, leading to leaks that damaged pupils’ work.

Head teacher Bernie Dennis said: “The children and staff were saddened by this. While we are pleased the roof has now been repaired, the children’s work that was ruined is irreplaceable.”

A police spokesman said metal thefts were on the increase with car batteries also being pinched for their lead.
