STAFF at West Somerset District Council are being forced out of their offices because they are mouldy and damp.

Planners at the council's Williton headquarters are to move into the council chamber after structural checks on their present office building found rotting window frames, rainwater coming in and problems with the electrical system, chief executive Tim Howes told the council's cabinet on Monday.

"The health and safety of staff is paramount, so we are moving staff into the council chamber, which will become a planning office," he said.

The nearby Red Cross Centre, on which the council bought back the lease earlier in the year, is to be used for council meetings wherever possible, but Mr Howes told councillors it would be a 'tight fit'.
