Cornwall are through to the quarter-finals of the MCCA Knock-Out Trophy after winning a thriller at a sun-drenched Falmouth on Sunday.

History repeated itself as Devon's last visit to Trescobeas, ten years ago, resulted in a Cornish win in the competition. That day Paul Berryman took five wickets to dismiss the "old enemy" cheaply for 116 with Cornwall going on to win by five wickets.

In front of a large crowd Sunday's gripping encounter was far more tense. Only for the third time in the competition a Cornish bowler took five wickets as Chris Hunkin ripped out the Devon middle order. The target of 154 in 50 overs proved anything but easy, however, as the Duchy scraped home by one wicket thanks to a last wicket stand between Gary Thomas and Justin Stephens of 18, in the most tense of finishes.

Cornwall's reward is a home quarter-final, at Falmouth again, on Sunday 10th July. Oxfordshire will be the visitors after they had their own drama of winning a bowl out against Cumberland at a soggy Sedbergh School on Sunday.

Cornwall made a late change with Paul's Neil Edwards, currently on Somerset's books, replacing Tom Sharp. Edwards opened with Somerset colleague Carl Gazzard and got the run chase off to a great start. The pair added 33 in only six overs with Gazzard looking in fine form, finding the boundary on five occasions. Going for his shots he sliced a catch to Nick Folland at third man, off the bowling of change bowler Trevor Anning.
