WATCHET rowers are planning a four-hour marathon voyage across the Bristol Channel.

Watchet Sea Rowing Club plans to row both its 24ft French class boats from Barry, South Wales, to Watchet to raise money for Watchet Carnival Club.

Club captain Lesley Abbott-Garner said: "This will be the first crossing of its class. Though the straight line distance between Barry and Watchet is around 12 miles its expected that the rowers will travel nearer 20 miles due to the strong tidal waters of the Bristol Channel."

He said Barry Rowing Club plans to escort the boats to the halfway point, where they will be met by a flotilla of boats from the Watchet Boat Owners' Association.

The rowers set off from Barry Yacht Club on Saturday, June 18, at 1.30pm and the seafarers hope to reach Watchet Harbour at around 5.30pm.
