Cornwall County Council is calling on Trinity House to abandon plans to switch off Godrevy lighthouse which, it says, would put lives at risk.
Representatives of Trinity House are in Cornwall today to meet with representatives of local organisations to discuss their ongoing review of the historic lighthouse on Godrevy Island which could see the light switched off by 2010.
There has been growing opposition to the plans from local councils and fishermens' organisations. Cornwall county council unanimously backed a motion attacking the proposal by Hayle county councillor Terry Lello in March. She said that switching off the light, which has been in operation since 1859, would cause extreme danger and hazard to small craft operating in and around St Ives Bay.
