A PROMISE by developers to pay a £100,000 forfeit if a new multi-screen cinema is not built in Falmouth within the next five years has been thrown out by councillors who feared that the facility would never be built.

New Cornwall Developments Ltd had applied to Carrick district council to break the link between the building of 14 residential units on the Falmouth Maritime site, known as block A, to the building of the cinema next door, block D.

In order to enable them to do this the developers offered a £100,000 bond to Carrick to be forfeited if the cinema complex did not go ahead within the next five years.

But at a meeting of Carrick district council's planning committee last week members voted to refuse the application on the grounds that if the linking together of the building of both blocks was revoked the cinema would never be built. Carrick officers had recommended it for conditional approval.
