A BLITZ on pet owners who let their dogs foul public places is under way with offenders being handed £50 fixed penalty fines and verbally warned.
West Somerset District Council's dog wardens have been patrolling in Dulverton, Watchet, Minehead and Porlock.
They have been reinforced by extra wardens from outside contractors to carry out additional patrols in areas suffering particular problems.
Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, councils can serve a fixed penalty notice of £50 on any person seen to be not picking up after their dog has fouled.
Failure to pay the fine can lead to a prosecution in the magistrates' court, where a fine of up to £1,000 may be imposed.
