WEST SOMERSET sailor Naomi Cudmore and the crew aboard BP Explorer were pipped into fourth place in a thrilling finish to the third leg of the Global Challenge round-the-world yacht race in Sydney on Sunday.

The boats had set sail from Wellington, New Zealand the previous Sunday on the 1,250-mile voyage to Australia hoping to capitalise on their surprise second place at the end of the second leg.

But as the 72-foot yacht stormed towards the famous harbour at a top speed of 16.4 knots on Saturday night, it was hammered by over three knots of current and lost valuable miles to the three yachts in front.
