CORNWALL Athletic Club's Senior Men's team were in top form in the season's fifth Westward Cross Country League race at Paignton last weekend.
A very strong 11-man squad dominated the race with Dave Buzza, Dan Simons, Ollie Shilston and Chris Harry firmly established at the head of the field from the start. Harry was the first to drift off the pace and on the third and final windy circuit of the relatively flat course, Shilston departed company with Buzza and Simons.
Not wishing to rely on a sprint finish, Buzza applied the pressure with half a mile to go, edging clear of Simons and winning by a couple of seconds. Shilston ran strongly for fourth place, with Harry crossing the line in sixth position.
Buzza, along with Simons, took time out from an England marathon squad training weekend in Winchester, to lead the club team to their third Westward League win of the season, which virtually ensures the senior men's team title will be heading towards the Duchy, for the first time in very many years.
This was Buzza's fourth league win of the winter, which guarantees him both the individual title and the top award in the Veteran's 40-44 age group.
