SNOOKER players in Falmouth and surrounding district will be able to enter a competition that will put themselves on a par with those taking part in the British Masters Championship currently being played out.

The idea is the brainchild of Paul Williams, the boss of the Bells Court Snooker Club in Market Street.

"It's a competition to add a bit of interest to the local snooker scene," said Paul. "When each of the major national championships are being televised, I will be hoping to run an equivalent Cornish Masters at the club.

"Anyone can enter, but obviously if there are large numbers we would have to play some qualifying games.

"We have some very good players in the club at the moment including young Bobby Southworth who is now making 100-plus breaks, but anyone can enter.

"All they need do is contact me at the club and we will take it from there.

"There is a cash prize for the winner, so anyone with designs on achieving a nice little win should make sure he gets his or her name down early."

Andy Hick's next major tournament is the World Championship qualifying tournament.

The second half of the season has not been quite so kind to one of the quiet men of snooker, but having begun the season ranked 51st in the world, he has now fought his way up to 30 which is a major achievement.

Andy has also just compiled his 40th maximum 147.
