FALMOUTH TOWN 6 TORPOINT 1

FALMOUTH Town clocked up their first win in 2005 in some style. Entertaining third from bottom Torpoint Athletic, Town didn't really have to stretch themselves, but they were never allowed to dwell on their supremacy despite cruising to their best home league win for several seasons.

With manager Steve Massey in Iceland his brother Stuart and Neil Phillips were in charge of team affairs. Ross Pope was injured so Darren Burchell was restored to the starting line-up. Martin Day, who had started every game this season, was dropped to the bench in favour of Wayne Brown - his first start of the season. The new signing from Truro, midfielder Sean McMahon, started on the bench.

In the 10th minute Torpoint full back Roger Collins clipped the heels of Carlton Farnham as he raced across the penalty area. Skipper Lee Beer stepped up with the kick and he slotted the ball home to put Town ahead, although 'keeper Mark Henwood did get a hand to it.

In the 23rd minute Paul Wolstencroft tried his luck from fully 30 yards, but his effort was never going to hit the target and flew out for a goal kick.

After 27 minutes a good piece of build up play by Town was halted after James Alexander caught Burchell after the ball had gone. The Town man got up to take the free kick and he curled the ball over the four-man wall and into the net to give Henwood no chance with a classic finish.

Ten minutes before the break, Alexander was cautioned after his third foul.

Two minutes later and out of the blue, Torpoint closed the deficit. Paul Partridge picked up the ball 25 yards from goal and let fly with a cracker that gave Ayres no chance.

Minutes later, and just like the previous week's home game against Launceston, the referee's assistant signalled that the ball had gone out for a goal kick - although Town felt it had not even gone across the touchline. Farnham was the Town player who kept the ball in and it was Adam Weston, who was cruelly denied a goal that his recent performances had merited.

A minute before the interval, Wolstencroft picked up the ball in midfield and ran goalwards before shooting across goal but with no player to get on the end of it, the ball rolled out for a goal kick.
