THOUSANDS of people from Redruth and the surrounding villages have signed a petition calling for better policing in their area.

The petition was started two weeks ago by independent Kerrier district councillors Graeme Hicks and Mark Kaczmarek and since then 200 people a day have been adding their names and addresses to the list.

The councillors claim this shows the huge level of concern amongst the local population about the growing levels of crime in their areas.

"This is a very serious issue," said Mr Kaczmarek. "We have had to put up with a 40% increase in the police precept in the council over the last two years so we should expect a decent level of policing. We're not happy to be paying for things which we're not getting."

The petition is calling for Redruth police station to be manned five days a week, whereas at present the councillors say it is hardly ever open.
