A CONTROVERSIAL Tetra mast near Mawnan Smith was at "half-mast" last week in what appeared to be an act of defiance by frustrated protestors.

The police communication mast, put up without planning permission by telecommunication company MMO2 over three months ago at Treworval Farm, was found last Wednesday to be toppled over, with rope hanging from one of the rungs and bolts unscrewed.

Peter Sitch, from MMO2, said: "It was an act of vandalism. Obviously it's a very stupid, dangerous and reckless thing to do. They were very lucky, these foolish and stupid criminal people, that they weren't injured by the mast falling."

He said the company put the mast back up on Sunday and communication was restored. Mr Sitch confirmed the matter was now in the hands of the police. The MMO2 spokesman said precautions had taken to prevent such an incident from happening again.
