A RECENTLY opened Camborne youth club is on cue for even greater success with the delivery of a pool table.

The Wimpy Youth Club, a burger bar in Trevithick Road, has been given the table along with table football and other leisure items by the student union at Camborne School of Mines, in co-operation with the management at the school.

Camborne mayor John Pope, who attended the presentation, said: "It's brilliant. Now the youngsters have got something to do, instead of drinking coffee and coke. It's going very well, keeping them off the streets and that's what it's all about."

Mr Pope said they were now looking for other organisations to come forward to increase the places where youngsters could go throughout the week.

"We're always on the lookout for other places to open on the other nights," he added.

The student union decided to donate the items following the school's move to the Tremough campus, to become part of the Combined University of Camborne.

The offer was supported by Bernard Harvey Pool Tables, which transported and refurbished the pool table and supplied free cues.

Mr Harvey also agreed to provide cups if the group wanted to arrange an inter-club pool competition.

About 25 youngsters were present to receive the items in an evening presentation at the burger bar, which opens every Tuesday and Thursday evening for 13 to 17-year-olds. They then joined with officials to try out the new facilities.

In a speech Mr Pope thanked all involved at the School of Mines for their donation and said that these items are now housed on the site of the former original home of School of Mines.

He also passed on a vote of thanks to Mr Harvey for all his help and co-operation within this project.

The opening of the burger bar last month followed a public meeting in the town on anti-social behaviour problems.

The move has been supported by Camborne police, who reported at a recent council meeting that there had been a noticeable reduction in anti-social behaviour.
