PUPILS at Beechgrove School, Wellington, spent last week learning about how the human body works with the Life Education Centre mobile unit.

Cllr Andy Govier joined year 5 pupils last Wednesday for their session in the unit, which looked at the affects of drugs and smoking on the body.

Mr Govier said: "I have two interests in the education centre. Firstly it was one of the charities I supported in my year as mayor last year and we paid for the vehicle to visit all schools so it is nice to see it in action.

"More importantly though, it is teaching the children about drugs and smoking and the affects on the body.

"I am concerned about the drugs issue in the town and think it is an important way to get the message across"

The learning centre, which was at the school for four days, uses a variety of tools to teach children about the human body, from watching videos and giving talks to an interactive model of the human body, which lights up to show the body parts.

Mr Govier said: "The mobile centre is designed to go back to every school each year. There are different sessions for each year group and means that as the children progress through the school they learn more and more."
