Conservative leader Michael Howard was in Cornwall this week unveiling his party's new five-point policy on dealing with illegal travellers' camps.
Speaking to reporters on a hilltop about a mile from a legal travellers' site in Bugle, near St Austell, he pledged to ensure planning laws were "enforced consistently."
"Most travellers live in a law-abiding way, with perfectly harmonious relations with the local community," he said.
But he added that many people were increasingly angry at apparent abuses of the planning system by travellers.
Mr Howard also visited Falmouth and met local police as well as going to Mullion to meet local doctors.
