THE new car park in Bar Road is certainly serving its purpose and does good business but we have noticed that there are 20 disabled parking spaces the majority of which are never occupied.

In fact, since the car park opened for business the largest number of disabled spaces we have seen occupied at any one time has been four and we have watched cars driving round looking for parking space while 16 bays remain empty.

I am totally in agreement with the provision of reserved spaces for disabled drivers. However I would suggest that in this case the allocation appears to be over generous and some research is required to assess the actual requirement.

We have also noticed that the lighting in the car park has not been switched on at night since the Fun Fair occupied the space in August. Pedestrians use the car park as an access to Events Square and the area is in total darkness. Surely the lights can be switched on at least until after the business premises have closed for the night.

Perhaps having the space illuminated would deter the graffiti exponents who have begun to deface the painted wall in the car park.
