A PENRYN'S man's death at the notorious Hell's Mouth came "completely out of the blue" despite a history of mental illness, an inquest heard in Truro last Thursday.
An open verdict was recorded on Martin Sampson, from Saracen Way, Penryn, who was found dead floating in shallow water off cliffs at the cove near Gwithian on Tuesday, on July 13 this year.
The 46-year-old retired policeman had suffered a fractured arm, skull and spine, which was completely dislocated, and a large wound on his chest - all believed to have been caused by a fall.
Coroner Dr Emma Carlyon said: "I think most of us in the court know what Hell's Mouth is like. It's a vantage point that many people use because of its beauty - but then there's a sheer drop on the other side."
