AFTER just one week, 300 villagers have signed a petition demanding something be done about cars speeding through Budock Water.

Nearly everyone who visits Budock Water Post Office and Stores is signing the form, which is demanding something be done to protect people walking through the village.

Postmaster Rob Gibson said: "It is a matter of time before something happens. There have been five or six accidents and it is lucky no one was hurt but it is just a matter of time."

He said: "We set it up because a number of people have been expressing concerns about walking through the village."

Fears are high someone will be hurt because there are no pavements on the main road, parked vehicles force pedestrians out into the traffic and cars are speeding through.

"It is just not safe to walk through the village," said Mr Gibson.

He said police and Budock parish councillors have encouraged the petition, which will be sent to Cornwall county council's highways department once all the signatures have been collected.

At the parish council's meeting on Monday another letter was received complaining about traffic speeding through the village.

The letter was sent after a car collided with four parked vehicles outside the village post office earlier this month.

Councillors decided to put the matter of road safety on their agenda for next month's meeting.

Parish clerk Avril Gowing said: "At the next meeting we are going to bring it up on the agenda to try and find anyway we can get hold of county highways and get them to do something."
