Yeovil Chamber of Trade has given its support to new plans to improve the traffic problems in the town.

Following a breakfast meeting with highway officials last week at Westland Leisure Complex, initial reports suggest that business bosses are backing the plans.

Chamber of Trade president, David Mills, said: "We need to back these plans as they are well thought out and likely to get Government funding.

"The alternative is simply to talk for years about more traffic and not actually do anything about it.

"Certainly the Chamber's initial response is that these plans are the best on offer and we need to seize the opportunity and get them in place as quickly as possible."

But the Chamber has pointed out that even with the proposed improvements, expectations needed to be realistic in terms of traffic levels.

"Yeovil is a very successful area which is going places fast and no area in the UK of a similar ilk or size has traffic that is any better.

"One very useful side effect of this review is that it has quashed several urban legends about in the Yeovil. For example we have often heard the comment that it is easier to get into Taunton than Yeovil - but that has now been discredited."

Sources within the Chamber have indicated that business representatives may attend meetings with Somerset County Council officials in order to ensure that the money for the transport proposals is allocated to Yeovil.
