A COMPELLING new exhibition featuring bronze and marble sculptures is about to go on display at the Lemon Street Gallery, in Truro.

Paul Vanstone's "Heads" includes not only around 20 models of the human head, but also torsos, abstract formations and mythical figures.

Vanstone, originally from Launceston, works in both bronze and marble and has travelled widely to discover and experiment with different materials to achieve a range of finishes and effects. A recurring interest for him has been the way marble both absorbs and reflects light, which has been used to portray human skin for centuries.

Vanstone studied for his BA Hons in Fine Art concentrating on sculpture at Central St Martin's School of Art, then went onto study for a masters degree in fine art, sculpture at the Royal College of Art. He graduated in 1993.

He has exhibited at several leading London galleries and examples of his carving have appeared in the Tate Modern.

For the past five years, Vanstone has been assisting one of the world's leading sculptures, Anish Kapoor.

"Heads" can be viewed at the Lemon Street Gallery from Friday, April 30, until Sunday, May 23.
