A BLISTERING spell of bowling by Justin Stephens demolished the ECB Premier League record after he took all ten wickets against Troon at Cape Road on Saturday.

Although ten wickets have previously been taken by a bowler in the Cornwall Cricket League, this was the first time it had occured in the new ECB League.

Ironically, the previous record was held by Malcolm Bell who took all ten wickets for Troon against Helston in 1995 in the old County I League.

It was the first home game in which Stephens played following his return from a spell with St Buryan.

The Cornwall medium pacer excelled in a career-best performance of 14-5-18-10, hitting the stumps six times against, in the main, the players batting from four to nine.

At the other end the "sprite-like" Graham Trenwith supported well with 13-3-47-0.

Electing to bat, Kevin Roberts was the first wicket to fall, lbw to Stephens with 12 on the board. Martin Jenkin (2) was out at 16, giving Stephens a return catch and the other opener, Alan Shears, was caught by Trenwith wth 19. on the board.

Trease, Strick and Rowe fell for ducks all bowled, as the score limped on to 25-7.

It was only thanks to some resistance by the tailenders that Troon were able to muster a score of 73. Two youngsters made 12 runs, Kitchen and Moyle who was 12 not out, with wicket-keeper Kevin Jenkin becoming the third player to score 12 runs.

With such a small total to chase, St Just were under little pressure with Neil Curnow making 39 not out in an innings that included a six and seven other boundary strokes. The home side opened with a 57-run stand with ebullient skipper Gareth May who hit six fours in his knock of 26.

It was the Rowe contribution of a catch by Chris off Martin that removed the winning skipper which left Rob Jose, who scored two not out, to join Curnow in obtaining the required runs from the fifth delivery in only the tenth over.

Troon failed to obtain a single point from their one-sided encounter with St Just, who, remarkably, picked up 20 points from their first win of the season.
